South America

South America sits between the South Pacific and South Atlantic Oceans, overall deserving of its reputation as the wilder of the Americas; though it is this less polished feel that makes it such a gem.

This is a continent where you can walk on the wild side, dance the night away and lose yourself in ancient civilizations, only to find yourself again through contemporary culture and pleasures.

South America knows how to orchestrate a grand entrance. You have barely stepped into the continent before some of the most awe-inspiring ancient ruins emerge from the jungle.  Guatemala’s Mayan temples stand proud amidst the trees and vines of the ever-encroaching jungle. Their stillness is interrupted only by the occasional cries of howler monkeys, giving you the space and time to reflect and to wonder what became of the people who built them.

The continent is strong on grand finales, too. The Chilean and Argentinian archipelago of Tierra del Fuego is a dramatic landscape of snowy mountains, imposing glaciers, tundra and surreal wind-sculpted trees.

In between there is a huge amount to see and do. Our Travel Managers can guide you through all that is available and help you to plan the itinerary of your next adventure.

Where shall we start?

The mist-covered peaks of the Andes, the dense Amazonian rainforest, the remains of Incan cities, laid-back tropical beaches, the unique wildlife of the Galapagos, the mystery of the Easter Island heads or the charms of the Spanish colonial towns?

South America can be as overwhelming as it is inviting. The sheer range of landscapes on offer here makes deciding where to visit a very tough call.

Meandering rivers flow through the lush embrace of the Amazon Basin while, in the arid Nazca desert, intriguing images are to be found which can only be appreciated from the air – even though they were created centuries before man mastered flight.

Here are fiery volcanoes and ice-blue glaciers, spectacular waterfalls and misty cloud forests.

Just as important are the people who live in these spectacular landscapes. You can mingle with the crowds at indigenous markets, shake your thing with brash Brazilian revellers, put your chaps on with the gaucho cowboys of Argentina or kick back with the Garifuna communities in Honduras, but you will always experience the passion and warmth that typifies Latin Americans.

The backdrop to your visit will be music. The rhythm of Colombian salsa, the sultriness of Brazilian samba, the tantalising Argentinian tango and the haunting Chilean pan-pipes will all provide the perfect accompaniment to your travels.

You are more than welcome to join the fun – South America, after all, is no place for wallflowers. Nothing beats feeling the heat of the moment at tango clubs in Buenos Aires, in the nightclubs of Panama, in Rio’s dance halls or in Colombia’s salsa-infused discos.

Things quieten down a little during the day, so you’ll have a chance to get your breath back. The romance of the colonial towns, with their cobbled streets, historic churches and monumental squares, can leave you feeling as though you have stepped back in time.

Nowhere is this sense more true, however, than when hiking to the ancient Incan temples or drifting past local tribes in a canoe on the Amazon.

A true adventurer has the chance to feel the force of the spray of the dramatic Iguazu Falls, to ride a mountain bike down precipitous Andean paths or catch the surf in some of the world’s most thrilling breakers.

One thing is for sure: you’ll never be short of new experiences in South America.
