The year-round sun of the Bahamas reflects brilliantly off its inviting white sand beaches and sparkling turquoise waters. This coral-based archipelago consists of more than 700 islands and cays that start to appear in the Atlantic Ocean just 55 miles (89 km) from Miami.

Due to its proximity to America, the Bahamas has become an important centre for offshore banking, but it is tourism that really brings the money in. Back in 1492 Columbus happened upon these islands in his quest for India – and the rest, as they say, is history. For those looking to explore the inviting sands and waters today there are a number of different options.

You can take a calm cruise around the Abacos’ historic Loyalist Cays or indulge in a late night dip and party ‘til sunrise on Paradise Island.

To really enjoy the crystal-clear waters and colourful corals teeming with shoals of fish, you can go diving in the mysterious blue holes of Andros, or follow James Bond’s trail to the Thunderball Grotto. Otherwise, you may prefer to enjoy the ocean from the surface by kayaking the 365 Exuma Cays.

Should the white sand become too blinding you can enjoy the pink sand beaches of Eleuthera – and if all this chilling out gets too much, there is always the piratical history of Nassau to raise the blood levels.

The islands of the Bahamas are a major destination for divers, sailors and sun-worshippers alike. Yet, whilst the appeal of the beach is hard to resist there is plenty more to enjoy besides windsurfing, snorkelling, parasailing and deep sea fishing. There are exciting casinos, fine restaurants and bars, with other sporting options such as bicycling, tennis, world-class cricket and golf always close at hand.

In general, the weather is good all year with cooling winds that ensure the temperatures remain comfortable.

The rainy season lasts from May to November ensuring that the Bahamas’ peak season falls between December and April.

As a rule of thumb the northern and western islands are cooler while the southern islands can get very hot in summer.

The average summer temperature in Nassau is 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit), which only falls to 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit) in the coolest months of January and February.

English is the official language used throughout the Bahamas.

All visitors must hold a return or onward ticket, plus proof of funds, and, except for Canadian and US nationals, all visitors must hold passports valid for at least six months after entry.

Most visits to the Bahamas are trouble-free. There have been fatalities related to jet ski hire on New Providence and Paradise Island so due caution is advised. Hurricane season runs from June to the end of November.
