Barbados
Known as ‘the Pearl of the Caribbean’, Barbados never fails to dazzle its visitors. Exotic resorts, glorious beaches and turquoise waters promise an idyllic backdrop for the wide range of activities available during luxury holidays in Barbados.
The pear-shaped island is actually a 20-mile (32km) stretch of soft coral – but it packs in a lot of attractions for its modest size, whilst still managing to make you feel that you are really getting away from it all.
Barbados is the most easterly Caribbean island, and was formed over a million years ago. Ever since, the ocean’s gradual erosion of the coral has led to the creation of spectacular, quite irresistible underground caverns.
Offshore, the coral reefs that envelope most of the island ensure warm, calm waters for swimming and water sports, as well as providing an underwater playground for snorkelers and scuba divers.
Barbados may well be the original fantasy island: it enjoys 340 days of sunshine a year, has impeccable facilities and friendly locals. No wonder it has become one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Caribbean.
If you can bear to tear yourself away from its stunning beaches, there are wildlife reserves, romantic walks and much else to explore on the island. The mysteries of Harrison’s Cave are a rewarding way to spend a day as are the historic delights of the Jacobean Mansions. The picturesque fishing village of Bathsheba is fast becoming a surfer’s destination, adding an atmosphere of excitement to its quaint charms.
Whatever you do – you are going to love Barbados!
Climate
The weather is almost guaranteed to be sunny and fair in tropical Barbados, where the average daily high hovers between 24 and 29 degrees Celsius (75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit). Thankfully, the year-round heat is tempered by the prevailing northeast trade winds. Hurricane season extends from June to October, but most major storms tend to miss Barbados. During this time, you are more likely to experience some rather spectacular tropical rainstorms that are usually short in duration.
Language
English is the official language in Barbados and is used throughout the island.
Passport Visa
All tourists must hold a valid passport as well as a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds for their stay in Barbados. Please check the rules around visa requirements before you travel, as they may change regularly.
Safety
There are no major safety concerns in Barbados. However, you should be aware that some drug-related organised crime does occur on the island, very rarely affecting tourists. The usual precautions should be taken regarding valuables and visiting isolated beaches at night.
